Best High End Trips: Juneau Small Boat Charter

The Alaskan Pennisula’s nearly-endless channels and islands and glaciers and hot springs and little coastal towns and short, clear rivers offer heaps of very cool exploring.  It takes some doing but you can charter a small boat usually used for whale watching, say, or fishing to go have a look around.  You could split the cost of the boat with friends, improvise an itinerary, and camp on various islands as we did or plan in advance and stay at bed and breakfasts and cabins.  Either way, you’ll get very close to all sorts of animals.  In our case we were able to see whales bubble-netting and a pod of killer whales chase a seal that leapt onto a small rock that happened to be home to a huge colony of seals, most of which then dove into the water to chase the killer whales away (while a cruise ship puffed away on the horizon on its way to the next jewelry emporium.)

We went with Harv of Harv and Marv:  Harv is a native of Juneau with a fantastic sense of humor and a keen sense of adventure (i.e. willing to take his boat into very shallow areas that almost certainly would involve his committing insurance fraud if he tried to file for any damages.)
