Bears in Alaska
More people die ever year of dogs, bee stings, lightening, and choking on pretzels. Yet you eat plenty of pretzlys. That said, brown bears are scary. We’re scared of them at least. So when we go out on a hike, we carry bear spray – shown in a Canadian study to be 92% effective against bear attacks (compared to 67% for firearms.) But that still leaves 8% of aggressive bear encounters where both are ineffective, so if we’re going into especially intense bear country (salmon runs, dense vegetation, frequent sightings) we go with a group of four or more – no bear has ever attacked a group of four people. And if we go on an overnight camping trip, we store our food in bear proof canisters or stay in public-use cabins. And there you go.
