Best Winter Things to Do
Northern Lights: Hard to plan around but we think they tend to be best in the late fall. Obviously, the farther north you go the better, but you don't need to go too far from Anchorage - Talkeetna is usually good enough.
End of the Ididarod in Nome: Here is some info.
Ski Train: A huge, barely-legal, one-day party aboard a train bound for nowhere. Each year, the Nordic Ski Association charters a train and heads into the mountains for one day of skiing, snowshoeing, and drinking. There’s a polka band on board and various themed party cars (In the past we may have been involved with one called “Yo Ho Ho: Pimps versus Pirates.”) It is a uniquely Alaskan event and worth scheduling your trip around.
Logisitical Note: Tickets go on sale in Octoberand usually sell out. Sometimes they’re available, though, on Craig’s list or ebay.com. You have to be a member of the Nordic Skiing Association but its cheap and easy to join.
