Best High End Trips: The Iditarod in Nome
There are two starts to the Iditarod sled dog race – one ceremonial start in Anchorage and one actual start in Willow, an hour or so north. But the real party is at the end – in Nome – when the teams start to come in. Most everyone in our favorite bush town comes out to celebrate – there’s golf on the berring sea (with green balls), dog mushing, live bands, crab feasts, and a lot of drinking and dancing and a genuine feeling of good cheer and comraderie – even if you just flew in to help celebrate. Nome in March!
Logistical Note: This gets booked up in advance, especially the hotels (there aren’t that many. We stayed at whatever the big, standard one in town was. It was fine, but we booked six months in advance. You don’t have to get there for the first teams to come in – that would be exciting but difficult to time. Instead, go for the weekend when most of the teams show up.
