BEST FISHING TRIPS IN ALASKA
We have no idea. But here's an intrdoction. There are three kinds of fish people come up here for. In our order of preference:
Rainbow Trout: The world’s best trophy trout fishing is here in Alaska. Both on the Kenai (though the trout are often ignored for the salmon) and on the Naknek River in Western Alaska. We only fly fish for these giants. The scenery isn’t too great and you won’t catch heaps and heaps of fish, but the ones you do catch can be very, very big.
Salmon: We like salmon fishing okay – but usually you are trying to snag some fish in the mouth – in our opinion it takes more patience and luck than skill. Alaskan residents can dipnet for them (as we do) to fill up their freezers but otherwise you’re just kind of flopping your lure into some murky colored waters and hoping for the best. (This section alone is reason to keep this site annonymous.) Where to go and when to go is beyond the scope of this web site but the Anchorage Daily News has a weekly fishing report that shows what is coming in and where.
Halibut: The silliest of all the fisheries in our opinion – it’s expensive (requires a boat charter), dumb (like a lot of deep sea fishing, the captain is the one who is actually making decisions and doing the fishing, you’re just the ninny holding the rod) and, worst of all, the fish doesn’t taste very good (it’s just a plain white fish.) We don’t get it.
