Best Medium Budget Trips: Rafting the Yukon
This is a logistically daunting but a technically-simple trip that doesn’t require a guide. Basically, you get a friend to drop you off in Eagle and you get another friend to pick you up in Circle, at least three days later. THere is no whitewater (the Yukon is one of the largest undamed rivers in the world) but you will get to see or at least float by some of the largest wilderneess left in America – we came across one of the two rangers assigned to patrol the 2.5 million acre Yukon Charley Preseve and asked if two people was enough. “Oh yea,” he said, “not much happening up here.”
Important Note: You must know something about bears to do this. We never actually saw one – though we did see prints on one of the islands we slept on.
