Talkeetna
A funky, little town on a dead-end road about three hours north of Anchorage and about half way to Denali. Good for a night. We especially like it in the winter when the giant cruise ship hotel outside of town is empty or closed. Has a few restaurants. Our favorite place is the The Talkeetna Roadhouse - an old, former boarding house with fantastic eats. Probably the best breakfast in Alaska, especially the cinnamon rolls. If you do go in the summer, might arrange to arrive in the early eaving, after most of the cruise ship people have hit the hay, no doubt exhausted from their Olde Time Wagon Coach rides. Also, Talkeetna is the staging ground for most Denali climbing trips so you’ll likely come across some very good look Italians around town.
Another cool thing about Talkeetna: It’s the launching off point for the last flag stop train in America – basically, the train heads north into the woods and you tell the conductor where you want to get off. To return, you simply hail the train and it stops. Fucking awesome - though we haven’t done it, we have spent a lot of time at this web site:
